Explorers Montessori Coastal Cooperative (EMCC) is a Montessori school located on Wilmington Island in Savannah, GA. We serve children between the ages of 1 and 6 years.
Curriculum
Students in a Montessori classroom are given presentations on materials in the following main areas:
- Practical Life – Children learn to perform tasks such as zipping a jacket, tying a shoe, pouring water into a glass, etc. Practical life lessons help children learn to take care of themselves so that they feel independent and less reliant on adults for basic needs.
- Sensorial – Working with materials researched and developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, children explore differences in color and texture as well as organize objects. There is no limit to sensorial lessons as every item in a Montessori classroom holds an opportunity for a child to develop sensorial mastery.
- Language – Children will learn to speak, write, and read in a natural progression where reading happens spontaneously after learning phonetic sounds, tracing sandpaper letters, and writing. In the writing stage, children learn to write in cursive first as the fluid movements of cursive writing come more naturally to children than block style writing.
- Mathematics – Children will learn addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division by working with materials that allow them to understand that numbers represent a specific amount and each operation is a manipulation of numbers.
The above are examples of what to expect from our classroom. Children will learn from other areas as well, including but not limited to culture and music.
